bert leveille ARTIST STATEMENT for "CONNECTING"

My art has always been about connecting to the collective conscious. I strive to tap in to that which I do not know; to discover unexpected images, connections and visual relationships; to explore emotions.

I believe that we are all connected, and especially to those that touch our lives. I felt this profoundly when my Dad died in 1988.

Again, this awareness has become so apparent to me over the last couple of years with the passing of too many loved ones. My Mom left me to do a celestial dance with my Dad on December 3, 2014. I can only have mindfulness of her essence now. Although my loss is personal, I recognize that it is a common experience that binds many of us together.

I am exploring consciousness. I used music to try to connect while I was painting: notably “City of Angels”, “Love and Rockets Express”, “Brainwave Suite” and “Awakening Spirit”. During the painting process I pulled images from the paint - like seeing images in clouds.

This exhibit is dedicated to my Mom, my champion, and her never ending love and support. It wasn’t until my cousin’s description of her ability to take on any task that I realized what a profound example she had given me. My Dad told me I could do whatever I wanted to do, and I now know that Mom showed me how. Thank you, Mom.
